Comments:

Slow contest out in the heartland with some of the worst Es in a June contest
for a long time. I operated portable on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River
in EM08 about 5 miles west of Nickerson, KS. It was hot and very windy both
days. The wind blew down the mast with the 70 cm and 23 cm antennas, breaking
both. The 2 el 6M yagi and mast managed to stay up for the contest, but by
Sunday evening the wind had twisted the elements and it looked like a windmill.

At the start of the contest heard SSB on 50.120 ? C6AIE or the ZF8. Faded out
before I could get the beam peaked. Had weak scatter 6M Es to FM and FN grids
for several hours on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon. I had a quite location
with great downhill horizon to north, east and south. For a simple 6M antenna -
the 2 el. yagi worked great. I could hear about everything KA0MR EM18 (who ran a
6M7JHV) was working. Consistent strong 6M signals from K8GP, N3EMF, K2BAR,
K3YTL, KT3Y, AA2UK and N2PA. Just a little harder to work stations with 10
watts. I would wait for a station to roll up on a QSB peak to work them.

Had to shut down Sat. evening due to thunderstorms. Sunday evening had strong 6M
Es to the north. Worked loud VE4s, VE5UF, VE6s and NT0V North Dakota. NT0V from
EN08 to N0JK in EM08. :-) Last hour of contest 6M opened to EN80s, EN90s, FM08,
FM19. W3GN had a strong steady CW signal. Final 10 minutes brought the best
moment of the contest working VA6AN DO42, then KC4PX EL98. Frustrating to hear a
loud K8CC who couldn't hear me. Best DX on 2M was W0RT EM27.

Radios: Six Meters: MFJ-9406

           Two Meters: IC-706

Antennas: Six Meters: 2 element homemade yagi on 4 ft. boom at 15 feet

Two Meters: halo on roof of car

Thanks to all of the ops who pulled my weak signal out of the noise.
