Saturday afternoon and evening yielded several passing thundershowers and heavy
lightning with lots of static crashes. Just when most of the storms made it
eastward down Lake Erie, a transformer blew which resulted in a good portion of
our county being without power. Bummer was, my half of the street was without
and the other side was with!
Sunday a few new stations showed up (were probably there Saturday but I could
not hear them with all the weather noise) and I was able to keep the contacts
going however, Sunday it did not pick up for me until the last leg of the
contest. I worked only two rovers on Saturday, NE8I/R and W8HTD/R. Sunday I was
able to work VE3OIL/R in three different grids. Hats off to anyone that does
the rover thing! Keep up the great work guys! I also enjoyed a run of VE3
stations during the last 1/2 hour of the contest.
This was my first time back into this contest since 1998. I have realized that
a station as small as mine, I need to add a few more bands if I want to compete
with some of the other multiband stations in my section. I plan on looking to
add 222 sometime in the near future, when I get budget approval from the XYL.
I had some, what sounded like MS, on Sunday hearing K1WHS in FN43 several times.
I tried calling them but they were only able to get a portion of my callsign.
I also heard (believe I have calls correct, sorry if any errors) K7(?)BV/R,
AA4ZZ, NC1I, and K5MA, none worked for me. They would peak loud and disappear as
quick as I heard them. K1WHS, was pretty consistant though.
In conclusion, seemed to be lots of activity however, it sure would have been
nice if 6 meters would have opened up. I have always enjoyed the VHF/UHF
contests and it was fun working it again. I will be looking forward to January.
Many of my contacts would NOT have made it into the log without using the trusty
old mode, Morse. Thanks to those that used the key as it helped this weak
station make a few more multipliers and points.
