Pretty slow start as predicted but 15 meters came to life early
Saturday morning. I really hit a groove on 15 so I stuck with
it on Saturday instead going to 10 meters when it opened. It was a gamble
especially if the propagation forecasts were wrong or something happened that
would cause 10 to die on Sunday. In fact the only
Europeans worked on 10 meters Saturday were via the second radio.
Thankfully, 10 opened nice and early on Sunday morning. One benefit as a
result of this strategy, is that I had a little extra time before 10 meters
opened Sunday morning to chase some juicy mults on 40, 80, and 160 meters.
One of the highlights was JF1IST on 80 meters via the Southwest path.
I just love working Asia and the Pacific on 10 & 15 meters
(especially 10). Hearing some of those weak DX1 stations in the Philippines
takes me back to my time in the Far East and memories of the locals in DU
gearing up for the magic that is CQ WW.
Too bad there isn't more activity from JA. I can recall stories of how guys
use to run JA's by the hundreds on 10 & 15 meters. That may happen on the
West Coast but it's pretty tough to do from this side of the states.
I had a chance to discuss this with JH3PRR (op at JA3YBK) who happed to be on
my Mongolia to Seoul flight this past September. We bumped into each other
at JT1KAA. Speaking of KAA, the locals have expressed, on several occasions,
an
interest in staging a multi-multi some time with guest operators. (hint
anyone?) That would be great but a check of DX Summit this morning showed
only JT1CO & JT1BV active this past weekend.

Congrats to KQ2M for the big score. Gosh Bob if I knew the margin was going
to be that fat, I might have slept for an hour or two!
Congrats to W3LPL, KC1XX, & N2RM (others?) who managed to work 5BDXCC this
weekend.
contester I admire - there are a number of them but a tip of the hat to
K3ZO. As Fred noted, he turns 65 soon yet he continues year after
year to post some extremely competitive Top Ten scores. He has to be the
Brett Favre or Cal Ripken (Iron Man for those outside the U.S.) of
contesting.
My neighbors outside garage light must be on some sort of sensor (motion?).
The path to JA is directly over their house. While working JA on Saturday
night, I noticed the light going off and on several times, every couple of
minutes. I didn't think much of it until later when I wondered if maybe it
was an RFI thing. About midnight I decided to point the 15 meter beam that
direction and give it a try. Sure enough the light went on just as soon as I
keyed the rig. Ooops
I must have smoked the line isolator or low-pass filter on the run station.
Sunday morning I went to 10 meters and the SWR was very erratic. I switched
the second radio to 10 and problem disappeared so everything from the inside
to
the tower was fine. I yanked those things out of the line and that problem
disappeared but the LED's on my Top Ten decoder and ICE bandpass filter
started flashing like some cheesy disco every time I keyed the rig. I
bypassed the bandpass filter and everything was fine much to my relief.
Anyone who has had to troubleshoot a key component of their station (10
meters) without any sleep for over 36 hours, at a critical moment like that
knows exactly the highs and lows a person goes through in a matter of
minutes.
