Set a goal to reach 1000 QSOs.
Started pretty slow Saturday and really did not do anything special. Ran out of
gas and went to bed early Saturday about 10:15PM, but got up and made my first
contact Sunday at 4:23AM. Starting about 7AM had got into a great run on 10, 15
and 20 Meters on Sunday. Generally I thought the bands were in pretty good
shape! Worked some JAs on Saturday night and a good amount of Europeans on
Sunday morning. I was very surprised that 10 Meters was open so well--I ran
stations for over 4 hours.
Did have a problem with FT990 on 40 Meters. It would work sometimes
and not other times. I could not get it to work during the last two hours,
which would have helped my total--oh well. It would appears to be transmitting
a solid tone, but no FSK switching or data. The same radio worked fine on
15 Meters but not on 40. Pretty strange. The FT 1000 worked fine.
Station: I think of my station as a "Mild Mannered Clark Kent" SO2R! I know I
don't use it as agressively as I should, but heck I am still just trying to get
it all to work together. Used a FT1000 and a FT990.
Antennas: TH3MKSII (10 and 20 Meters) at 46' rotatable, DB1015 (15 Meters) at
30'fixed to the North, Delta loop (horizontally feed) on 40 Meters and an
inverted vee for 80 Meters.
Miscellaneous Equipment: Writelog. Use one computer (AMD400MHZ)
and two monitors. Used two AF4Z Multi Modem Terminal Units with Yaesu monitor
scopes for tuning.
Had 3 busted DX contacts. The serial numbers were omitted. Of course, I got it
or thought I did, but apparently when you get the call and the number, then need
to make a correction to the call by clicking on the corrected call it deletes
the number. You have to re-enter the serial number. Three got by me-Darn!
Still got alot of stuff to do to improve the station and operating. Definitely
need to sort out the problem on the FT990. Have stubs but still have a little
boardband noise between the two radios between 20/40 and 40/80. Those antennas
are only about 2 or 3 feet apart. Guess I need to build or get some band pass
filters. Need to get more agressive with the second radio. I found myself
being pretty lazy with it several times.
I just saw the post by AA5AU, congratulations Don! Hard to stand up to this
level of competition, but heck I am not competiting with Don, just myself! This
is the best I have done and even with the problems I had, the best my station
has played in this configuration! I am pretty proud of my effort!
Thanks to everyone that gave me a QSO. 73 and cu in the next one!
Jim/KC4HW
