My first BARTG RTTY Sprint...Lotsa fun!!
Had no idea what to expect from this contest...Looking at prior years' results,
I thought to myself that 500 QSO's and 70 or so mults was reasonable and would
produce a decent "first timer" score...That's what I started off shooting
for...I had written off getting any of the Japanese call areas as I NEVER hear
Japan here...Direct path over Santa's house kills that area of the world from
here for the most part...Thought I could snag a few VK's, knew I could easily
get all the US call areas and most of the Canadian call areas...That thinking
proved wrong as I had only 1 VK, 5 Japanese, all 10 US and only 4 Canadian (VE4,
VE5 where were you ?)...The Japanese run on 20 was a nice surprise and made up
for the low Canadian mults worked...Interesting to listen to a RTTY signal with
Arctic flutter on it...One never knows what to expect...
15 metres was great from 1200 through to about 2000 and 20 was decent from 1200
until 2200...10 was terrible the whole time (only 22 QSO's !!) By 2200 I had
over 500 QSO's in the log so I began to hope to reach the 750 QSO mark before I
flaked out for the night...40 turned out to be terrible!! Ended up S&P'ing 40
and 80 from 2200 until 0310, and with only 81 QSO's and 1 new mult between the
two, gave up at 0320 or so...Figured I'd get lots of rest and get up early for
the early morning EU opening for the last couple hours of the contest...Then it
was 1230...Dead alarm clock...Arghhh!! Contest was over...Lost at least 100
QSO's and a few mults for sure...Even missed the first hour of our local
Maritime contest Sunday morning...At least I was well rested...
All in all I'm happy with the score and had a great time (even though I missed
10 hours)...Rtty contesting is completely different than CW or SSB and is
quickly becoming my favourite mode...I'm looking forward with interest to the
WPX RTTY in Feb...May even use my VA1WPX callsign for that one...I'll have a new
alarm clock by then for sure...
Equipment: Same as always...FT1000MP, (that's ONE), an AL811 amp loafing at
300-400 watts, an Explorer 14 for 10, 15 and 20 and wires for 40 and
80...Writelog with MMTTY for logging...MMTTY still crashes on me every once in
awhile (can't figure out why) but I've become good at relaunching it in the
middle of a QSO without losing anything (for those of you who had to wait 5-10
seconds for a report, now you know why!!)
Thanks for all the QSO's, many 3 and 4 banders...CU in the next one...
