Soapbox:

Strange conditions, especially on the low bands! Absorption was evident through
Saturday. 10m was in a penalty box for some of Saturday, with stations to the
south crushing us into Europe and beyond. Saturday night found 160 and 80, but
especially 160, struggling to make Qs. Things improved a lot towards European
sunrise. Perennial single-op and troublemaker K1AR joined the team for the
first time and, despite being sick during the contest, had a fun time. Also
thanks to K6AW for making the trek yet again and doing a FB job, as usual.

A couple weeks prior to the contest, KC1XX, W1FV and a helper straightened out
some problems with the 80m antenna systems in the cold weather we've been having
here. Maintaining an antenna farm this large is a lot of work. And thanks to
Bill K1GQ and XX who have been steadily building up the 2-radio capability on
20-10m, complete with Acom Commutator lockout systems. This capability makes it
easier to vacuum out a band and to work stations on the second radio when the
runs slow enough to enable this.

Some whine to follow, cheese unavailable, see the Sultans of Schwing at Dayton
for the cheese:

- 40m rotor stuck on Europe, rotor frozen, despite valiant attempt by XX to
unfreeze it...AD1C did a fine job of coping with it...difficult to work much JA
as a result
- packet spotting continues to be abysmal; c'mon guys, learn to copy the code!
It's not that hard!

Great score by the W3LPL team, despite their being crushed by QRN and a
crippling 2 foot snow storm moving through their area. Great job, Frank and
team. Also a great score by the K1XM team at W1KM. Their antenna farm is a
fraction of that found at LPL and XX, but their location is fabulous (salt water
marsh location near Cape Cod Bay). And they put a great team together.

And special thanks to Christine and Matt's daughters who, as always, keep us
well taken care of during the weekend.

73,
Dave KM3T, on behalf of the whole KC1XX Team
