Comments:
Met Dick, WC1M and Rafael, KP4WW for the first time on Friday, and they both did
really well and had a great time. We all kept each other going. And sleeping.
Both are welcome newcomers to the XX Ranch.
Rough weekend. Trapped in an auroral zone all weekend. I might rather do 1-3
in a Federal pen.
We're pretty spoiled in the Northeast, and especially in New England. But, if
this is what being in the Black Hole is like (I think the Black Hole is really
worse), then I really hand it to the guys who do really well from there!
20m and the low bands salvaged things a bit for us. One JA on 15m. Ouch! And
Europe on 15m was not there at all until approx. 16Z Saturday. The sunspots are
definitely going away. Soon we'll al lbe heating up the ionosphere over Africa
working each other scatter-path.
We discovered an open in the 80m EU antenna system Friday before the contest. I
climbed up to the 150' position, where the main feedline connects, and all
seemed well. Conferred with GQ and XX. Decided to bag it and work on it
Saturday. Beamed SE all Friday night and listened on the EU Beverage. Ironman
K1GQ climbed up no Saturday to check and see if the hardline center pin had
pulled back from the connector. He climbed up 150' to find out it hadn't. That
only left 1 likely possibility...the splice. Which on the surface appeared
fine. But under all the tape and coax seal it was not. :-) GQ and XX fixed it
and we were back in business for Saturday night.
No packet this weekend. Hopefully it will be a trend that other multi-ops will
adopt. Packet isn't much of a factor in a contest like WPX, anyway. But it's
more fun to find the mults yourself in CQWW and ARRL anyway. And it was a
pleasure not to watch spot after spot of busted callsigns. What other multis
will step up to the plate and ditch packet? If the spot supply dwindles,
what'll be left? :-)
Thanks to all the stations who got on this weekend and worked us, and everyone
who stuck it out despite what was pretty bad propagation in the northern
latitudes and elsewhere. And three cheers to the WPX Contest for doing a M/2
category!
