Dateline: Somewhere in the Black Hole. Thursday May 22, 2003

After several seasons of serious competition in the LPGA
(Low Power, Gain Antenna category), N4TZ/9 announced Thursday
that he was following the lead of Annika Sorenstam and facing
the world's best by entering this weekend's PGA (Power and Gain
Antenna category), the CQ WPX contest. Terry has received
a sponsor's exemption and will be using the call KS9K.

The roar from Indiana this weekend will not be from the cars at
Speedway, but from the QTH of N4TZ/9 where a pair of TenTec
Titan amps will be hitched to the faithful pair of OMNI VI+s.
N4TZ has been quoted as saying, "I hope that I do not embarrass
myself and make the cut." Rumor has it that at least one
high power champion had promised his XYL that he wouldn't
enter this contest if he did well in the last one.

When asked whether this change in category is a portent of things
to come, N4TZ merely noted that a sure way to improve his SS
scores for the Society of Midwest Contesters is to run more power.

After a first round ranking of 73 (honest!), Annika Sorenstam failed
to make the cut with a ranking of 96 out of 100 entries. Ten of the 15
top ranked golf pros did not play in that event. An ill wind is blowing
in the central USA. N4TZ couldn't find his 7 wood.

......

One of the things that is NOT the same in ham radio as in golf is that
the PGA regulars are not welcome on the LPGA tour. Can you imagine the
firestorm that would erupt if Tiger, Mark, Vijay or Phil showed up
at the last minute to play in an LPGA event? Congratulations to K3WW
for his fine LP showing. At least I don't have to wonder whether I
could have won the LP category this year!

......

Using high power meant that I didn't have to tune so often with the
right radio hand, so that my wrist didn't fail as it did during the
2002 CQ WW CW contest. Thanks to K9MI for the use of a Microsoft
ergonomic keyboard. It took a few hours to get used to the placement
of the numbers, but now it seems comfortable. TRLogs output suggests
that I spent about 25 hours of the 36 available running (or quick
walking). Nonetheless, over 300 fewer Europeans found their way
into my log than in last year's LP effort. I did pick up 92 JAs on
20 meters as a result of running. A couple of times Sunday afternoon
I put the second rig on 10m and let it CQ while I trolled 15 & 20
for DX, resulting in about 50 US & VE contacts on 10. Found 1 European
(CT1ILT) on 10 during the run as I had the wide filter in.

Off times: 0545-1010, 2159-2300, 0502-1011, 2235-2359

......

The roar of all those blowers takes some getting used to! As one who
finds a computer's fan obnoxious, I was uncomfortable with two linear
blowers. The 220 volts arrives in the shack through a 125 foot long
extension cord to the clothes dryer outlet, so I didn't have the
opportunity to test things out more than one hour in advance. I
settled on using only one Titan and used the Hercules II solid state
500 watt amp for the second radio. The Hercules' fan is a lot quieter but
I lost some of the desired flexibility of having either radio be the
run radio.

......

The running of the CW WPX contest in late May provides interesting
evidence on the debate about Say's Law in economics: Say said supply
creates its own demand, while Keynes' position was that demand creates
its own supply. Each year I notice the relatively poor conditions
surrounding the contest dates, yet with the first salvo of CQs, the
bands spring to life. I interpret this as evidence in support of Say,
because the supply of stations seeking contacts in the contest causes
others to try their hand operating. Anecdotal evidence suggests that
CQing (demand) in the days leading up to the contest resulted in
relatively few contacts because of the weak supply.
