Comments:

I recently moved to a new QTH, so I haven't had much time to put up antennas,
let alone tweak them or anything. All I've been able to do is put up my
vertical antenna and run about a dozen ground wires, so I was happy just to be
on the air for this one.

After handing out Halloween candy on Friday night, I joined in the NCCC Friday
night SS practice, and everything seemed to be doing well. My antenna was
playing on 20, 40 & 80 and tested fine on 10. I did a lot of work to set up
Writelog properly - so this year I was ready with the CK? SEC? etc. (That was
probably the biggest station improvement I made from last year, getting all of
those F-keys in the right order.) So I *thought* that I was ready...

As usual, I couldn't start this contest until after 03Z, so I figured I would do
some work past midnight on 40 & 80 and make sure I got my mults from W1 W2 and
W3.

Instead, the SWR readings that were fine 24 hours earlier were completely sky
high one night later. Several trips outside with the flashlight didn't do
anything, so I finally went to bed after two very frustrating hours, not wanting
to fry my radio or my antenna tuner...a big disappointment, especially when I
had set aside time to be able to contest.

Sunday was my usual contest-type mix of 20 minutes of yard work, 20 minutes on
the radio for several hours between 10 and 20 (bad SWR on 15.) Then we had
family over for some football and dinner, and I went back to the shack for the
final two hours of the contest.

Suddenly, Murphy was gone! SWR was fine again on 40 and 80 and I S&P'd my way
to an 86/17 in the last two hours of the contest, and even beat my score from
last year.

Go figure. I moved some of the lines around when I was raking leaves, maybe
that *fixed* things for me. Who knows. I've got two weeks now to get ready for
the phone version...Thanks to all for the contacts.
