Congrats to W4AN and W8JI!
First time for me with more than 300 Europeans in a 160m contest; quite a
thrill.
First night started out fine with 130 and 138 hours, ahead of last year's pace.
But then condx fizzled and we ended the night with only 51 Europeans. VK3IO had
a great signal at his sunset, and we worked several KH6, but no other Pacific or
JA heard all weekend.
Second night we had a few Europeans in the log the first few hours, but at 0130z
the floodgates opened and the pileup began. While the band would fold
occassionally for a few minutes, the good conditions to Europe held until after
0730z. Nice to hear all the UA and UR stations coming through.
Third night we continued to have very quiet conditions and I was hearing many
Europeans, all the way up to 1875 kHz. But no luck with them on my CQs, so I
used the second radio to S&P and picked up 11 more 10-pointers. MD4K was our
next to last multiplier. Came across A61AJ on 1828.5 just 15 minutes before the
close and got him in the log for our last mult. Only other Asian worked was
5B4AGC on Saturday night.
A couple of LA stations and a 4Z5 called in the second night but I couldn't
confirm the calls; I think these were the only DX mults that I heard but didn't
work.
Missed ND, VE4, VE6, VE8, VY1 and VO2. Heard a VE6 working someone but couldn't
snag him.
I spent several weeks before the contest putting up a new broadside phased
Beverage pair at 105 degrees to help with the ZS and other African multipliers.
So of course when ZS4TX called in at his sunrise Saturday I was listening on the
European Beverages -- but he was louder on the new pair aimed his way. Never
heard S9SS, but did get EA8, D4 and CT3.
Thanks to W3DA and N8NA for being on -- for a while I was worried I'd miss my
own state!
Thanks too to all who have de-clicked their radios, and to those who haven't but
QSYd when they moved in close and I complained.

The hardware:
FT1000MP with Inrad 250 hz and 400 hz filter pairs.
TS940S second RX with 500 hz Kenwood filters.
4-1000A grounded grid amp.
Top Ten DX Doubler SO2R switching box
Series-fed 30-meter high Rohn 25 vertical with hundreds of radials. Parasitic
reflectors and directors for NE direction only (more coming).
A selection of 16 Beverage antennas. The originals (starting when we moved to
this QTH six years ago) are single-wire. But the newer ones are phased arrays --
either stagger-phased or broadside. Most are 450-550 feet long. Two single-wires
are 880 feet (one to 110 degrees and one switchable 162/342).
Heil Proset headphones -- A few days before the contest, I replaced the
speakers with new ones that match better to the MP and found this a big
improvement.
NA 10.58 logging software.
I usually set the TX on the sub-VFO in the MP, and tune with the main VFO using
the 250-hz filters. I find these narrow filters especially helpful for sorting
out the pileup of weak Europeans. I can usually identify several different calls
as I tune across the pileup.
I ran most of the contest with the MP attenuator set at 6 db or 12 db to help
with the overload. The external Ameco preamp that I sometimes use for DXing was
off for the contest. The MP's internal preamp was left on while I was listening
on the Beverages but was off the few times I found listening on the TX array
better than the Beverages (this was mostly at our sunset and at European
sunrise). Usually I had the RF gain backed off a bit too.
The 940 is in the left ear and, being broader, catches callers who are a bit off
frequency. It also can select a Beverage in some other direction than the main
radio so I can hear other stations calling in when I'm focused on Europe. When
the run slows down I use the main VFO in the MP to search the band and keep the
940 on my TX frequency.
