Comments:
Thanks to Tom, W6KP, for letting me use his mountain top QTH again. I wasnt
sure if I was going to put in a full effort in this contest due to the bad
weather that was supposed to come. The weather forecasters predicted heavy
rain/snow all weekend, so I figured I would have to deal with tons of static on
the bands. Luckily, the heavy snow didnt start until about 18z on Sunday. At
that point, all the bands became alomst unusable, but I was able to S&P for some
of the louder stations and did that for a few hours. Finally, at 21z I worked
everyone on the bands that I could hear, and decided to pull the plug.
Band conditions were better than expected. As everyone else mentioned, 80m was
simply amazing. KP only has a simple 67 ft vertical on 80m, and normally I am
lucky to work 1 or 2 EU (last time I did this contest from his QTH in '00 I had
0 q's with EU on 80.) This time I managed to work 45 EU and a ton of mults,
including A61AJ and A45XR LP in the morning. It was alot tougher than normal to
get a run going on 40m to EU this time. I had much better luck in the morning
LP than I did in the evening. 20m was pretty much a bust, as it closed really
early and the usual EU runs werent there. 15m was once again the money band,
with nice rate to both JA and EU. 10m was open great to JA, but was only able
to work 12 EU on the skewed path. The nice thing was all 12 of them were
mults!
Even with the less than optimal conditions, I worked more EU than I did JA (961
to 935.) I think this is more due to the fact that there is hardly any
participation nowadays from JA than having good condx to EU. I wish there was a
way to try and increase participation from our friends in Japan.
Congrats to W4PA and N2NT for amazing scores. Also thanks to N6BV and N6RT for
providing some competition from CA.
