Comments:
Wow what a weekend! The chances for this type of band conditions at this point
in the cycle have to be about 1 in a million. Conditions were hot leading up to
this past weekend but the big question was would they last. I guess it was a
good omen when 10 was still open to Asia as the contest started. QSO #1 was
with JD1BIA in zone 27 on Ogasawara. I figured I better grab what I could just
in case that was the last of Asia on 10 for the weekend.
Funny how things work out sometimes. I almost had notions of sitting this
one out. I have a tall Poplar tree near the back 20/40meter tower. Since
spring, some of the branches have grown so that the 20 meter reflector gets hung
up just enough to keep it from rotating most of the time (unless there is a
breeze from the right direction). I guess the tree trimming business is good
out here because I had a heck of a time getting someone out to give me an
estimate. When I finally did, he laughed when I asked him if he could get it
done before this past weekend. Now what to do? I thought about single band,
joining a multi op, or just sitting this one out. Well to keep it brief, I got
this smart idea to loosen the guys on the side towards the tree and to tighten
the one on the side of the tower away from the tree. I was able to pull the top
of the tower over just a few inches but it was enough that I was able to turn
the 20 and 40 meter beams again. Desperate times call for desperate measures!
For whatever reason, I wasn?t as psyched up for this weekend as in years
past. With the tree issue resolved, I just decided to get on and see what
happens. Well the rate sheet pretty much says it all. By late Sunday morning I
was digging through my CQ Magazines to see what the US SOAB record was (K1AR
1999 with 7,898,499). Who would have thought at this point in the cycle that
would even be a remote consideration! I had planned to bring a TV into the
shack so I could watch my Packers who were in town to play the Redskins on
Sunday afternoon. Well I decided I better concentrate on the matter at hand if
I was going to have any shot at John?s record so the TV stayed in the other
room. Unfortunately I came up a little short. If I had any inkling I was going
to be that close, I probably would not have taken the 2 hours off very early
Sunday morning. Then again that might have been a mistake.
I blocked out 3 hours before the contest for a nap. I just couldn?t doze off
and got maybe 30 minutes of sleep. As a result I was pretty tired the first 34
hours or so. Occasionally I would nod off and I just wasn?t very sharp. After
that 90 minute nap on the second day, I didn?t feel tired the rest of the way.
Sometimes it makes sense to grab a short nap instead of toughing it out. I
doubt I would have done as good running stations on Sunday if I was as exhausted
as I was by Saturday night.
Well it will be interesting to see how the other SOAB guys did. The usual
suspects were heard all over the bands this weekend so I?m sure they benefited
from the great conditions as well.
