What a great way to start the NAQP.....at 100 feet on a tower. I did some major
repair work on the top 15 stack, including the rotor, in the week prior to the
contest. Ten minutes before the contest I began turning the stack toward the
west from the position it was in, east. Uh, it ain't moving. Tried rocking
etc, still no luck. Grabbbed my son, told him to sit at the rotor control, and
up the tower I went...pretty fast for an old fart. After cursing and screaming
at the rotor, I finally got it to move through whatever mechanical bind there
was a set it northwest, where it stayed for the contest. Back down the tower,
and into the radio room, nice and sweaty. The clock now said 1815Z, time to
contest. Nothing like a trip up and down the tower as a pre-contest workout.
Conditions were great.....all time QSO total high for me. I felt like a west
coast station in NAQP, with the rate clock over 400 several times. I didn't try
to move too many guys to the upper bands since conditions up there were pretty
long.
Felt really strong on 20, 40 and especially 80....really puny on 160. 160 sucks
in FL. I really enjoyed this one. By the way only one "10-4" during the whole
contest....a big improvement.
See you all in the Sprints.
