With the geomagnetic storm on Friday, I was afraid that it was going to be a
long weekend, just like CQWW CW, with good JA, but very poor EU from the
southwest New Mexico QTH. I was pleasantly surprised ! Conditions kept
improving as the contest went along.
160 - Outstanding conditions to the Carribean on Friday night. It was a real
pleasure to be able to quickly work those guys, without waiting for them to
finish working every QRPer on the east coast. No EU heard out here. Good JA
propagation both mornings, but didn't spend much time, since the rate was always
better on 40 and 80. The high point was working VR2BG.
80 - Excellent EU opening Friday night at their sunrise. This allowed me to
take off 03Z-08Z Saturday night, without worrying about missing much. Good JA
conditions both nights. Where were all the VK/ZL stations ?
40 - Okay EU opening Friday night. The usual outstanding JA opening both
nights. Fantastic EU run Saturday night from 08Z-10Z - just kept going, well
after Europe was in daylight ! This just doesn't happen from here in the
southwest.
20 - A tough band from the SW USA. Just too much absorption during the daytime.
Did manage to have decent EU openings for about an hour each morning, just
after sunrise. The MUF really drops in the evening - only have about an hour
between the time 15 closes, and 20 closes. A surprise EU opening at 11Z Sunday
(4 AM local time). It only lasted 25 minutes, but was good for 48 QSO's. Fun
!
15 - The daytime workhorse. Fair EU opening Saturday, excellent EU opening
Sunday until 16Z, when it suddenly went flat. Good JA openings.
10 - Well, the sunspot cycle is showing it's age. First time without a 10 meter
JA run since 1998. Only 3 JA and 10 EU QSO's, plus a near-ESP QSO with
perennial QRPer Dale, N7ET/DU7. Heard a number of big gun EU stations doing S&P
on Sunday, but never heard them CQing, and they didn't answer my CQ's. None of
them were moving the S-meter, but I think they would have been easy QSO's. No
VK heard - seems strange, since ZL2BR and ZK2HA were copyable for hours.
Interesting comparisons to CQWW CW. Had virtually the same number of QSO's, but
much better condx to EU this weekend. Also seems that this contest is not as
popular in Japan as CQWW CW. I guess I can understand why, but it sure hurts
those of us in the western USA.
