It's always something...
The entire week before the contest, my wife was in bed with the flu. I started
taking Tamiflu once it was clear she really had the flu and not a cold. Well,
guess what? I woke up Friday morning with a fever and a cough. I guess the
medication blunted the symptoms, as I was never had a high fever and chills like
the XYL did, but I still was sick. So, I decided I'd operate as much as I
could, for the club score.
As it turned out, I operated more than expected. Like K5ZD, I just got so
wrapped up in it, I kept going. I went to sleep Friday night when I couldn't do
any more (about 0500Z) and Saturday night the rate had slowed enough to be bored
and gave me a chance to think about how bad I felt (0330Z). I didn't set a
morning alarm, but woke up around sunrise without one. I also took a bunch of
15 minute breaks through out the day to rest, pop some Tylenol and cough syrup,
etc. I couldn't concentrate well enough to do a lot of SO2R, especially on the
low bands. The other problem was QRM from coughing fits. No DSP filter makes
that go away :.)
Regarding the contest itself, 40 got off to its usual good start, but died after
only an hour. I went to 80 and had some pretty good runs there. The low bands
were unusually quiet, and my intermittent power line noise behaved this weekend.
10m was pretty much a non-entity, however, I did take advantage of one short EU
opening on Sunday afternoon. I was tuning 10 and heard F5UKL about S-8. After
that, I tired some CQs, and worked a short burst QSOs with new mults including,
G, GM, TF, OH, OH0, and SM. The opening was limited to the UK, France and
Scandinavia. Several of the stations were S-0 and had that raspy aurora
sound.
On the negative side, there were a lot of bad key clicks and wide signals from
EU. Also, I had more frequency fights than usual. One EU station started a CQ
zero beat with me on 40m and just wouldn't go away. Since I wasn't doing a
competitive entry, I decided to play with him and pull a KQ2M. I set up an
auto-repeat CQ, went to get some food, and while I was eating, I listened to him
just keep CQing, never working a single station. After 15 minutes or so, when I
was ready to operate again, I QSYed.
I didn't set any personal rate records, but had some excellent hours:
