N5RZ was unable to really operate the station this year, so K5TR let me play
around and see what 24 hours of sweepstakes is like. I was exhausted going in
due to work and family issues, and I am sure that influenced the number of
errors I surely made and fills I requested although I doubt I could have done
much better score wise under any circumstances: I just learned the code at too
old an age (my thirties) to ever be really good. How do you put it in words - I
dunno, but I am still hearing "SS" ringing in my ears. Since I had a two hour
drive at the end, I took four hours off as a block during the night (sleeping
little) and the last two hours of the contest. With a few hours to go, I was
ready to bail out. I didn't care at all about finishing, but George kept urging
me on, and I was only short NNY and VT for a sweep. I stayed on 15, then 20,
and kept an antenna towards 1- and 2-land. I am just amazed at how many 1-calls
and 2-calls are not from VT or NNY: every time a "1" or "2" answered, my hopes
rose only to come crashing down! Finally with about 90 minutes left to operate,
both came through, and after that I was just numb and on autopilot. The
downside of great antennas and power is trying to copy all the folks through the
QRN and QRM, so thanks to all for the fills.
