Comments:

This time many first-timers made it to the station. We were welcoming DL2CC,
ON5UM, OZ1AA, PB2T and SM0WKA for the first time. They teamed up with
more-or-less regulars DB6JG, DJ7EO, DL1IAO, DL5KUT, DL6FBL, DL6LAU, DO1ET,
JK3GAD and PC5A.

Murphy already showed up before the contest. While it was just cold and windy on
Thursday, it started snowing later that evening. When we got up Friday morning,
there were a few centimeters of snow on the ground. Markus, DJ7EO, waited for an
hour at the railway station to pick up Thomas, OZ1AA, aboard the 07:50 morning
train. Yet the train never made it. It broke down some stations before. When we
finally got aware of this, Markus drove to the other station to pick Thomas up
there. Markus came by the QTH on the road and reported that during the night one
element of the 3-ele 40m KLM had broken in the middle. One half was missing, the
other hang around way down. Instantly we decided to tear down the rest of the
antenna and replace it with a new 3-ele 40m Fullsize, which Carsten, DL6LAU, had
been carrying on the roof of his car the way down from Hamburg the day before.
We even managed to complete the mechanical work on the beam by early afternoon,
but the wind was blowing too heavily, and we never had the chance to put the new
antenna on the tower. So we entered the contest with a broken 2.5-ele 40m
antenna. Friday afternoon Teemu, SM0WKA, came in by plane from Stockholm. A
direct flight into the new Niederrhein-Weeze airport next town. Murphy had been
on this flight as well: the pilot had to touch-and-go on his first try. On the
second try he touched down, but overreached the end of the runway and finally
stopped on the meadow...

We got a good start in the contest. Saturday afternoon we were about 500k ahead
of our 2004 (!) SSB score, and I was pretty sure that we could reach at least
our 2005 SSB score of 16.2M points. Since we had always presented our actual
score online on our website http://www.df0cg.de, our competition was well
informed all the time. I heard after the contest that we really were way ahead
until Saturday afternoon. What happened later on must be discovered by log
analysis with our fellow competitors. I do really hope that DQ0Q (DF0HQ) will
change their mind and join the open log policy, which we have practiced for many
years.

Plans for 2006 include mounting of the now pre-assembled 3-ele 40m Fullsize as
well as an 80m Yagi. As a by-product this will enable us to lengthen the
vertical part of the 160m T-Antenna (now only 18m) to some 25m+. And even more
important: we now have the hardware to display forward and reflected power at
the operating positions at any time (computer controlled). The OP's can't see
this now. That's why 160m transmitted I don't how log with the coax cable and
the radials alone after the hot wire of the T-Antenna broke... Even more
embarrassing was to find out Sunday afternoon (!) that 10m had been operating
barefoot all the time before... :-(

CONGRATS to our competition this time, but we will try harder next time... :-)
