N3BB NAQP CW 1/2006
Very difficult on 15 and 10. I spent too much time trying to maximize the three
High Freq bands, and then had to stay on at sundown as 40 was hot and the rates
were around 100/hr, and I couldn't take a break then. I finally made myself
stop at 0255!!! So at that point, I was hardly on 80 at all, and not on 160 at
all. Thus there were three hours to go, and I had to take two of them as off
times! I used my one hour calling CQ on 80 and S&Ping 160. really did a poor
job of time management. As a result of insufficient time on 160 (and 80), I
missed many easy mults including MS and CA and...darn! I should have followed
my own plan of taking at least 30 minutes off in the afternoon. Oh well.
Some high-lights were VY1JA on 40, and VE9DX and his rock crusher 50 watter on
80 and 40 and one of the high bands. I'm afraid I have hurt myself badly with
the poor mults on 160 and 80.
I tried to move a lot of stations. Most failed as 15 and even 20 were poor. I
actually moved some people to 10 meters early, and scratched out a few QSOs
there. For some reason, there is an abundance of VE6s these days. Nice!
My station worked well-no problems with the gear. The bands were very quiet,
and it was easy to hear on the LF bands. It was harder on 20 ands 15 and 10.
I ran at 32 WPM for the most part, and QRSed for all callers that were slower.

Many excellent sounding signals and good operators. The NAQP is one of the best
toughest CW contests. The strategy element (and I botched it here) goes to show
how interesting it makes a contest to have to take off times. It reinforces my
feeling that contests should have required off times for S/Os.
