Comments:
Part time effort. Started off strong with my best first hour ever, just a few
QSOs better than my previous best in 2002. Operated all but 3 hours of the
first 24 and just a few hours on Sunday morning. By the time Saturday night
(local time) rolled around, I was bored (38 Qs during the 0100Z hour) and tired,
which wasn't helped by some bad power line noise which came after a day of high
winds and coldest night of the year.
I will remember this contest as the one with some of the rudest operators ever.
A few lowlights...
1. I'm running on 40. N5PO comes along.
N5PO: QRL?
ME: RR
N5PO: CQ TEST DE N5PO
ME: QRL PSE QSY
N5PO: WHY SHUD I QSY?
ME: CUZ I WAS HERE FIRST AND ANSWERED UR QRL.
N5PO: FU
Why "QRL?" if you're gonna CQ anyway?
He CQs under me for 10 minutes or so then realizes I've been making QSOs and he
hasn't. He slinks away with his tail between his legs.
2. I'm running on 40. VO1MP comes along and starts a CQ immediately after I
stop.
W2UP: QRL PSE QSY
VO1MP: FU
and he's gone.
How's that for short and to the point? Interestingly, I noted he spotted me on
the Cluster a few hours later. Is that some kind of apology?
3. I'm running on 20. K2NG comes along and sends a QRL? about 50 Hz below me.
I send RRR. He CQs anyway. It's hard to believe he can't hear me as he's about
40-50 miles from me and S9. After a few more QRLs, he moves 100 Hz above me and
sends another QRL? I ask him to move a little higher. He doesn't. He also had
his key-click generator turned up full, which didn't help my filtering attempts.
Nasty radio, Noah! What is it? Also, every now and then, he'd slide down a
bit to try and push me down (which wasn't an option as LPL was below me.)
NG is one that jumps on just about every packet pileup, so there were quite a
few times he disappeared for several minutes. I was hoping he wouldn't come
back after each quiet spell, but he did for quite a while. It's an interesting
strategy - pick a run frequency very close to another station. That way when
you QSY for your packet pileups, you know it's unlikely that someone else will
take the frequency.
To end on a positive note, N2NT and I were pretty close to each other on 40 for
a while. Andy is only about 30 miles from me and loud, but we had no problems.
His signal was very clean with no clicks. A fine frequency neighbor!
