Comments:

This was our third Jim White, K4OJ, Memorial Operation from Domninca, and the
largest one that we have put on from J7 since we began to go there in 2000. All
of our operations, including this one, are total FIELD DAY style. That is, when
we arrive, nothing is set up, and when we leave, nothing is left behind, not
even a scrap of tape on the ground. It is total no-impact hamming!

On this trip, the five of us arrived late Saturday afternoon. The first thing
we did was get a Pro2 set up with a dipole so that Jim, J79WI (WI9WI) could work
the NA Sprint. This he did, and managed something north of 100 Q's barefoot.
This was no doubt the first and only Sprint operation from J7.

On Sunday, up went three yagis. A C3 on a 20 ft. pole. An A3 on 30 ft. of
bamboo, and a 4el 10 on 40 ft. of bamboo. Lambert, J73LC, cut fresh bamboo out
of the jungle on the day we arrived.

On Monday, up went the 160m Inverted L. This time with 15 radials cut into the
jungle floor. Also, thanks to Ron, J79RV (KK9K), up went two 80m Inverted L's
phase fed with a Comtek box, and who-knows-how-many radials, again on the jungle
floor.

We all operated extensively during the week before the contest, but John J79IX
(W4IX) took the lead in making the most non-contest Q's. We all concentrated on
160 and 80 at night, and on a couple of nights, the European (and some Asian)
openings were the best we have ever seen from J7.

Unfortunately, the weeks operation took its toll on K1XX's MLA-2500, and it's
power transformer went to transformer heaven on Thursday. Once again, Lambert
came to the rescue with his antique SB-230 which we then used thruout the
contest at its max of about 300 watts. Our other amps, an Acom 1000 and an LK
500 performed well, although we held them at about 600 watts in hopes of
preserving them...which we did.

Charlie, K1XX, is truly the master of networks. He got ours working in the blink
of an eye! WriteLog came up on four laptops without a hitch and we never
experienced even one WL or network crash over the entire ten days. We odid not
have any packet or Internet service to help in finding mults. We did man a K2
on which we did a lot of multiplier hunting, but hunting for mults as DX in an
ARRL contest is rather hopeless.

We had hoped to place as the top place M/M, but it looks as though PJ2T's
operation has reported in as M/M, once again beating us out score wise. Too
bad, as we really needed the wood. Congratulations, Geoff.

73, George, K5KG / J75KG
