This is the best we have ever done in a July NAQP RTTY.
10m was fantastic. In last July's NAQP RTTY, we had 2x1 on 10m. This time,
10m was open for us through the first seven hours, and was probably open beyond
that. In the first several hours of the contest, we had good 10m propagation to
everywhere except W5. The stations north of us generally had better signals
than southern stations... quite a surprise. Then later in the contest,
propagation opened to W5. We contacted W1DY in OK at 2330Z and N5ZM in AR at
0Z. Both were loud! It was a great weekend to be on 10m! Combining what I've
noticed in IARU and now NAQP RTTY, this year has had the best 10m openings in
contests in the month of July that I have ever experienced. I'm familiar with
the sporadic E in the December 10m contest after sunset with W7/W0, and know
E-skip is much better in the summer months, but E-skip from the CA Bay Area to
W1/2/3/4? It plays with your brain because you want to believe this is F-layer
propagation, but the solar flux index is only 70! For example, what propagation
mode was involved during our two 10m QSO with Massachusetts? Multi-hop E-skip?
We are happy with our numbers on all the other bands as well. There seemed to
be fewer mults active this time than normal. We only had KP4 and TG as NA
country mults. It was interesting to hear some Europeans active in this, as we
made QSOs with S5, OH, F, and CT. We made a couple of QSOs with PY, and were
surprised to contact 5F50KD on 20m and 40m! There was excellent VE7 and VE3
activity. CA, TN, VA, and TX led the way with the most overall QSOs for us.
Many thanks to everyone for all the QSYs! We must have told over 100 stations
to check 10m, and were really happy to see lots of stations appear there.
VA1CHP finding us on 80m was a terrific surprise. We worked 23 stations on all
5 bands!
This was overall a very enjoyable 12 hours. Finally, below are some statistics
