Comments:
Going into this contest I thought the bleak conditions we are encountering at
the bottom of the sunspot cycle were going to be my biggest obstacle. I was
soooooooooooo WRONG!!!
To start off, Glenn is modernizing his superstation which started with a new
computer, guess what.....new logging program. I had never seen N1MM before
this contest so I literally dove into it Friday night before the contest. Boy
was I in for a suprise!!! There are some really nice features in that program
and some I really didn't like and I can tell there is quite a learning curve to
get comfortable with the program..........which I didn't get time to
accomplish!!! Overall the program was ok to use as I fumbled with the mouse
and hotkeys. I've got a lot to learn!
Saturday morning I woke up as usual but something didn't feel right in my head.
I got on and listened to the bands 15 mins before the start and then the bell
rang. The start was a little slower than normal but rates were satisfactory.
As the afternoon came, I started to feel really bad and my head was stuffing up
to where it was hard to breathe which made SSB a struggle. My condition
worsened throughout the contest which didn't bode well for the score nor my
state of mind. I figure this was due in part to the Santa Ana winds blowing
through Southern California during the weekend which caused humidity to drop to
near 5% with blowing dust and crud causing me to grab a quick sinus infection
which I am still dealing with as I write this more than 2 days after the
contest :-(
The Santa Anas also made operating difficult with a constant noise level that
also affected N6MJ @ W6YI just 8 miles away from my operating position. In
that sense, we had a level playing field of nasty static.
I also got victimized by the VY1/VE8 missed mult sickness that so many of you
have reported. It wasn't for a lack of trying to find one or CQing in that
direction enough. I spent a few Kw/h of SoCal Edison energy blasting a signal
due north in an effort to get one but they never bit, nor did 24 hours of S&P.
Maybe next year we'll figure out a "county expeditioner to VY1" to help out with
that mult. This is the first ever time that I missed VY1/VE8 in CQP! I've got
an idea, hey Dan N6MJ, do you want to go to VY1 next year to help us with the
mult???? ;-p Other mults that have been tough in past years were well
represented like ND/SD/UT/SK/MB with several stations worked in each. A
well-done effort surely reflects the hard work by the organizing comittee.
I'm glad that the "CQP at the Bottom" is over with and I'm looking forward to
the next few years of increased activity and increased scores. There are
records to set and personal goals to break. I'm up for the challenge put forth
each year and hope to catch you all for the next edition of the best QSO party
in the world!
