Comments:
This was my twelfth trip to the Caribbean for CQ WW CW and ninth visit to
the V26B super station. As always, I would like to thank WT3Q, N3OC, V21N
and Team Antigua for helping to make this effort possible.
The station was in great shape when I arrived. The only problem was that
the bottom antenna in the 10M stack was inoperative - this didn't matter
anyway as 10M was not very productive. The backup generator transfer box
was out of service, but V21N set up a manual failover approach should it be
needed. Fortunately, there were no power drop outs at all, which I think is
a first for me in Antigua. Beverages for Europe and NA survived the time
span between the V26B operation and mine and they really helped.
I was generally pleased with my 2006 operation and therefore decided to use
it as the basis for my 2007 goals. I assumed a small increase in QSOs and
multipliers, and an average of 2.5 points per QSOs. I scaled my 2006
results based on these assumptions. (I also tested this approach against
the CQ WW SSB 2007 performance of V26B and 8P5A to see if there was anything
out of line.) My performance against these goals is shown below:

I significantly underachieved! Obviously a big part of this was caused by
my poor results on 10 and 15. I truly expected an opening on 10 at some
point, but it never happened. Although 15 did open, I did not have the kind
of rates to Europe that I've enjoyed in previous years. I also believe that
80M was down a bit from last year in that I never was able to generate a
good European run.
I started to feel in trouble around 1300z on Saturday when the rates were
less than I expected. It felt like Europe dried up on 15 and I couldn't get
anything going on 20M. I realized that I would need to change my strategy
so I decided to allocate more time to hunting than I had planned. The
following shows my actual time allocations against my pre-contest plan:
Scenario Goal Actual Delta
Run 3 Pt 28.8 27.1 (1.8) hours
Hunt 2.2 4.0 1.8 hours
Run 2 Pt 12.0 12.0 0.0 hours
Total 43.0 43.1 0.1 hours
These time allocations produced the following results:
QSOs/ Mults/ Points/
Scenario Hour Hour Hour
Run 3 Pt 144.6 11.4 158094
Hunt 28.6 31.1 431871
Run 2 Pt 165.5 9.3 129626
Overall 129.4 12.6 175467
My productivity during 3 point runs was down significantly from last year
(203K points / hour) primarily as a result of lower than anticipated rates
on 15. My hunting productivity was approximately the same as 2006, which is
sort of unexpected given that I spent twice the amount hunting in 2007 as I
did in 2006. The time I spent running NA was very enjoyable, including 4
hours of rates in excess of 200.
Thanks for all the QSOs. I will go again in 2008. QSL via AA3B.
