Comments:

Great plans were beaten by the weather: Force 10 gales and higher gusts, along
with torrential rain predicted and delivered on the Thursday before and
predicted again (and delivered) on Saturday meant that the mobile tower
remained luffed over and the 40m beam remained in its box. The main tower with
the 4 el SteppIR was lowered to its lowest position, 25ft, and the 80m and 160m
inverted vees ran from their peak at 25ft down to 6ft above ground level at the
ends.

And then company arrived for the weekend as a surprise.

At first it seemed the best plan was to give the contest a miss, but then I
wondered if I could give out the GD mult to a few big guns even with the
antennas lowered and not wanting to even turn the beam as it was being so
abused by the winds already. I started on 160m at 2AM, an hour after the
contest started, and found the low inverted vee to be a nice quiet receiving
antenna, but perhaps not the best transmitting antenna. But once the fun
started, I didn't want to stop and so modified the original strategy to be one
of opportunistic S&P, with runs only when conditions were really good, which
happened a few times.

At 10PM on Saturday night after a full dinner and TV movie, the winds died down
to 25/30mph plus gusts and the tower was cranked part way up so the tower was up
to 55ft for the rest of the contest.

I'm still primarily a cw contesting type, but the 15m opening to all areas of
North America simultaneously on Sunday afternoon, with the rate meter peaking
over 300 and staying above 200 for 90 minutes, was very heady business indeed.
There was also a good run to JA on Sunday morning on 20m that was a lot of fun.
10m never really opened for us this far north, with only 5 QSOs in the log
despite checking many times and trying to QSY with stations from 15m several
times (only one success - M6T).

Thanks for all the QSOs and for all the patience when needing repeats to get my
call sign out of the noise! See you in the next one!
