Comments:
Got off to a slow start, was beginning to think it was CQ WW DX CW all over
again with poor openings... It didn't turn out to be that bad. A few less QSOs
than last year and 4 less multipliers. Folks musta been bummed when the one
active KP4 was signing /W2 ;o) Regret not hanging tight in the LAX pileup as
California appeared to have actually fallen into the ocean. very few K6s were
heard, much less worked. On the other hand, plenty of MT stations. Heard WY in
S&P but never caught up with him. Noise must have been lower in parts of EU as
it was easier to make a few QSOs this weekend versus last. Some intense
pileups, folks really need to listen more (or maybe be able to hear the DX to
begin with) it would make the whole affair go better on both ends...
Gene, KB7Q, and I have been talking this year up since the end of the 2007 run.
I have to say on Friday/Saturday I think he had the best signal out of the West.
Saturday/Sunday everything out of 7Land seemed muted, you could almost draw a
line at Ol' Miss the effect was that profound...
Lotsa new calls in my log, which was great to see.
The Elecraft K3 played beautifully. When doing S&P, I could pick out the weak
signals between the big boys, sometimes even under them. Nothing helps when one
is running surrounded by plus 20+++ signals and you're trying to catch folks
calling you waaay off frequency. C'est la guerre!
Great turnout from several of the contest groups, Tennessee was well
represented... so was Minnesota. The club competition should be real
interesting this year.
Nothing new Antenna-wise, the same 72' tee vertical. Got a short beverage up
(330') and it was good for dropping some of the noise from time to time, still
used the Tx vertical most of the time for Rx.
Did nod off several times and had a half hour catnap this morning so I could
finish it up.
VO1HP was the last multiplier. Notable as I was not expecting to add any more
AND I never seem to work NL in any of the ARRL events :o) Many thanks to K2NNY
for putting NNY on. Maybe we need a plaque for VE4, NNY, ND, NWT and those
other chilly places as an incentive... No KL7 this year, the props weren't very
good for them.
Thanks for all the patience, QSOs and fun. Thanks to Gene and Rick (WB8JUI) for
the pump up before the event.
See ya in the TBDC, most likely QRP.
73,
Julius
