Comments:
Started the contest about 45 minutes too late while trying to figure out why my
K3 would not communicate with the PC. As I was trying to swap in a spare
laptop, change cables, fiddle with the COM ports, USB adapters etc, all of the
sudden everything started working on its own.
As it turned out, my K3 does not handle a cold environment too well. Upon
arrival on site the room was still cold and that seemed to cause some problems
with my rig which was doing all kind of funny things such as randomly going
into TX while spinning the VFO knob etc.
Next day after I arrived onsite exactly the same thing happened. I started
working the contest by using the paddle while watching rigâ??s built in front
panel temperature sensor. Once the K3â??s internal temperature reached 15
degrees Celsius, everything started working fine.
On the positive side, K3â??s receiver was terrific in handling things on
crowded 160. At one point I was scratching my head watching the QSO rate
falling rapidly only to discover, after switching in a wide roofing filter,
that I was calling CQ almost on top of W8JI. I didnâ??t hear him at all while
using narrow filters.
Other problems were mostly operator induced such as falling asleep at the
keyboard with Win-Testâ??s Auto CQ feature engaged :-( .
>From my perspective the conditions to EU were not all that great, especially
during 2nd night. During their sunrise, the atmospheric noise went up and EU
signals were weak and raspy even for usual suspects who are typically always
loud here.
I missed KL7, VE5 and VE8 for US/VE sections. The latest one worked were WY and
VE4 (thanks N7NG and VE4EAR for calling in).
A big thanks goes to VE3FF and VE3CN. Without their help, I would never had a
opportunity to operate in this contest.
