If I hadn't been on a team, I would have thrown in the towel early.
I started out on 10, but nothing. 15, nothing. So went to 20 and was not
overwhelmed by the level of activity. Kept checking 15, heard a few signals
(N1MGO had a good one) but could not get anyone's attention. At 2135, my wife
came home and I took an almost hour-long break for lunch (you could tell I
wasn't too serious). I also was picking off Mississippi stations in their QSO
party on 40 CW as the spots came across the County Hunter chat room.
After working Delaware on 40 at 2233z, I got a small run going. and pretty much
stayed on 40 for the next 1.5 hours. Until I got going on 80, I kept checking
20, picking up an occasional multiplier, while trying to keep the QSO rate up
no 40 (which for me is about 30-40/hour). This is all single-radio mind you.
At one point while I was running on 40, four Maryland stations called me in a
row, broken up by PA, WA and OR, then two more MD called in.
I should NOT have been able to work all the stations on 80 that I did. My
antenna is not resonant on 80, but I had put a remote tuner in the attic 1/2
hour before the contest started, hoping to get some QSOs out of it. The tuner
made 15 meters act a little funny, but the pay-off on 80 was worth it. I still
can not believe I worked more mults. on 80 than I did on 20! I had lots of
trouble finding WA and OR on 80, figuring they'd be easy. I did work WA
towards the end but never found OR.
The East Coast seemed poorly represented, I never heard Maine or Vermont. I
suspect the 160 meter contest diverted their attention.
I was happy to get some points for the team, and to work some new states
towards the Triple Play award. I'm looking forward to the summer edition, when
we might get some E-skip on 10 and/or 15.
