NSL Week 6 @ K0DXC is recorded and online in STEREO quality at
http://k0dxc.com/audio/nsl-582009

I got on 14240 at 0130 UTC to find a mob of about 50 stations all calling CQ
at
the same time. Absolutely ridiculous. Obviously we need to suggest more than
one
frequency to use. I made a quick QSO with W0RIC that was interrupted about 5
different times, QRM made it impossible to ragchew even though he had a solid
59 signal.

I very frustrated throughout the contest. This week just wasn't my week. I
made
my best score ever but I could have done so much better - propagation and my
station just didn't smile on me.

Right before the NS I was sitting on 14040 calling CQ and working most parts
of
the U.S. I worked K7SS, K7JA, WD0T, and a few others. All of them had good
signals. Then when the NS actually started I worked N9RV, K7BG, and N5DO;
picking up MT and TX. Because of my pre NS success I thought that if I hung
out
longer on 20 I would pick up a few more mults. I was wrong. For the next 7
minutes my log looks EXACTLY like this.

QSO: 14040 CW 0230 K0DXC 1 KID OH K7BG 1 MATT
MT

QSO: 14042 CW 0230 K0DXC 2 KID OH N5DO 1 DAVE
TX

QSO: 14042 CW 0231 K0DXC 3 KID OH N9NB 1 TED
TX

QSO: 14040 CW 0231 K0DXC 4 KID OH N9RV 5 PAT
MT

QSO: 14046 CW 0232 K0DXC 5 KID OH K7BG 5 MATT
MT

QSO: 14042 CW 0233 K0DXC 6 KID OH N9RV 8 PAT
MT

QSO: 14041 CW 0233 K0DXC 7 KID OH K7BG 7 MATT
MT

QSO: 14044 CW 0234 K0DXC 8 KID OH N9RV 11 PAT
MT

QSO: 14044 CW 0235 K0DXC 9 KID OH K7BG 10 MATT
MT

N9RV then K7BG then N9RV then K7BG..... I'm sure it would have kept on going
if
I hadn't switched to 40.

40 meters was jam packed like it was a few weeks ago. People need to try to
spread out more. Don't think that just because you call CQ on 7049 that people
won't answer you --- they WILL! I tune throughout the entire portion of NS 40
meters and I keep on going until I run out of signals. The same thing goes for
80!

I lost a lot of jump balls on 40. This was probably because I shredded up a
few
more radials with the lawn mower last weekend. Oh well, come summer time I'll
just put down more. Things on 40 were so loud and crammed in that I found
myself using the 250Hz filter a few times! I missed a lot of "easy" mults and
I
don't think I worked anyone out west.

Now comes 80 meters. 80 has been my favorite NS band. Now I'm rethinking that.
QRN, QSB, more QRN... Wow! In addition to that I think I lost about half the
jump balls on 80. That never happens! Normally I can crank away! There was a
ton of QRM, people need to SPREAD OUT! There were about 15 stations in 2KHz at
one time.

41.7% of my QSOs were dupes (with intervening Q's). That was kind of weird.
Last week I think I worked only 1 or 2 dupes the entire contest.

I thought it was funny when in the SNS I had F3NB call me. Is this the first
time someone has worked EU in an NCCC sprint? I logged his section as "DX" but
he did send me a name and number.

I heard many new calls tonight...

KE0G, K5ZD, KK9V, and K4RO (in the order that I first worked them). I'm sure
there were many more first-timers out there. Oh yes, and F3NB!

Thanks for the Q(s). I'm looking forward to finally meeting most of you at
Dayton this week! I'll be at the NS dinner Thursday night!

Comments always welcome - K0DXC (at) K0DXC.com

73,
Cal "KID", K0DXC
