What a magic band! Where else can you S&P up the band and work the states next
to you, Canada, both coasts, a bunch of Carribeans, and even a few EU stations
in a span of 20 minutes. Despite my short time in the contest, this was one of
my most memorable ARRL 160 contests ever.
I took 15 minutes on Saturday afternoon to work a bunch of stations, some
local, some as far away as Iowa -- not bad several hours before sunset from
STx. Then I had a couple of nice S&P 30 minute excursions, first in late
afternoon, and again from 0520 to 0550Z. Finally, I got up and operated about
45 minutes prior to local sunrise.
The band seemed very good. OM2VL surprised me with a very solid S7 signal, and
he was worked with a single call like he was just any other stateside station.
I didn't focus on DX a lot, but was able to work most of what I heard.
Someday I'll stop doing all this music stuff on weekends and give some of these
contests a serious try. ARRL160 has been very good the last couple of years and
will be at the top of the list!
