Comments:
Conditions on Friday into Saturday were incredible! Was able to keep 100/hr
consistently for the first 24 hours. Every band seemed to be perfect, quiet and
wide open. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a special version of
PowerSDR/IF-Stage http://www.wu2x.com/sdr.html from Scott and Chad (W1CEG,
Thanks Chad for getting me this just before the test) Around 3 AM on Saturday
morning I placed the 2nd radio on 20m knowing it would open in a few hours,
this way I could periodically look and "see" if there was any activity.
Initially I could see the normal East coast M/M stations on the trace. The real
surprise was around 4am I started to see more traces so I took a listen and
could not believe 20 was already ripping into EU! I would have never went to 20
so early otherwise so that was a very cool surprise. The first 12 hours I was
well over 1K q's and at the 24hr mark 2K and 2mil. I went into the test
figuring I was going to do a full 48 run, by Sunday 1:30am I caught myself
falling asleep and waking up to billion stations calling! After spending way
too much time asking for repeats for EE5E I knew mush brain has set in and I
needed to get some down time. After a couple hours sleep I felt like a million
bucks but I would have really liked to used those hours to get some more q's in
the log, next time. I find myself focusing on my running and not enough time
chasing mults on the 2nd radio, I suppose this comes with experience. Saturday
around 5pm local I swung the top antenna to JA and had a very nice asia run for
a good hour. Lots of strong JA's that gave TT1 and TT5 that had great signals,
even had a couple HL's and a 5W0 call. The other surprise was I decided to go
to 40 early on Sunday to secure a good freq. I went over at 2pm local and a
nice freq at the bottom and started calling. After the first CQ I was hit with
a wall of over S9 replies, band was wide open and it was a endless pit of RA,
RV and RK's just booming in along with a handful of VK, ZL long path at the
same time! 98% of the test was very enjoyable, the last 2% were some very odd
situations of stations that simply thought they needed the freq more than me
and I am not sure what that is all about. I have to say that most of the time
if you ask nicely "PSE QSY" all is good, then you get some replies like "NO"
and the gloves come off. I hate that, but I won't turn down a good fight ;) So
it goes, I'm sure it won't be the last time. Another fun contest and it was a
real pleasure to see 15 open and soon enough we will be making 1000 q's on 10m
