CQWW is THE best!!! What a blast!
This was a shakedown for my station (so far) and a learning opportunity session
for my YL friend, KF5HHD. We did a M/2 so she could familiarize herself with a
phone DX contest & all the accents, QRM, pileups, etc. that go with it. I put
her on 20M & then 40M the first night, 20M (with a little bit of 10M) all day
Saturday + Sunday morning, and 15M Sunday afternoon. Talk about jumping right
into the fire!!
40M SSB sure is painful with a Butternut Vertical - although I worked two BY's,
a DU, and RT5Z on longpath Sunday on 40M after sunrise. Also was skeptical
about my 80M inverted vee at 50', but it far exceeded my expectations. The
80M condx about 30 minutes after sunrise on Saturday morning were the best I've
ever heard. Between 1314Z & 1327 worked VK4KW, 9M8Z, AH0BT, KH6LC (who was QRP)
RA0FU and several JA's - all their sigs were well over S9.
15M was incredible as well - hope it holds out for CQWW CW.
Was very happy with the station performance. No problems except for some RF
getting into the USB Keyboard & mouse on one computer when on 15M, fixed with
ferrite clamp-ons.
No interstation interference at all, even though the towers are only about 70'
apart. No 160M antenna yet -- may try to get up a 160M inverted vee up
before CQWW. No place for a vertical since the farmer will be planting the
winter wheat crop at the end of November.
As rusty as I am on phone, CQWW is still the King!! Still ran out of steam
Saturday evening and wasn't motivated to interrupt my sleep to get up early.
That's OK - I'll make up for it in SS CW & CQWW CW.
Equipment: Two Elecraft K3's, Alpha 99, Alpha 87, ICE 419 bandpass filters,
Top Ten Band Decoders, 2 PC's using N1MM software with soundcards used for
voice keying.
Tower #1 TH6DXX @ 50', 80M inverted vee at top.
Tower #2: Rotary 10-15-20M triband 2-el Delta Loop & 50'
Butternut HF6V ground mounted with 3 80M radials.
Even with small antennas, it sure is great to operate from home. Hope to have
a lot more hardware up next year - will be pouring bases for 8 towers after the
first of the year.
Thanks to all for the QSO's, and Deborah thanks everyone for their patience
with her. She had a great time, and was a real trooper - she spent 35 hours in
the chair and even did some CQing. She is taking her General on November 13,
and if she passes, we will each do a single op from here in Phone SS.
