Comments:

I started contest with the idea that I might quit due to several line noise
sources that I have been dealing with for a few weeks. One noise is very close
to my QTH and gives an intermittent level of 10 over S9 (lightning arrestor)
others were also bad lightning arrestors and bad hardware. Due to some
miscommunication both myself and the power line tech thought the work had not
been completed but in fact it had been so he had to start over on Monday
looking for other sources. It normally takes 2 weeks to complete a work order
so I was doubtful it would be completed by Friday. But on Thursday morning I
saw 4 trucks working in the area so thought I might be in good shape. On
Friday, there was no noise so I started the contest with high hopes. But at
1000z the nearby arrestor popped up again and lasted until daylight or about 4
hours. The radio NB took care of some of it but not all the time depending on
band and other loud signals on a band. The noise was back the next day and
also the last 4 hours of the contest but it probably didnâ??t hurt me too much
except on 80 and 160 on weaker stations. I did take sleep breaks during some of
the noise times.

Since I am using an antiquated computer system and DOS for my beloved TR, I
didnâ??t anticipate a new CTY.DAT file that would hog my limited computer
memory and cause me to reboot every 15 minutes at the contest start. Luckily a
DOS program reboot is only about 15 seconds so just an annoyance. I did finally
install an old CTY file (had to log on paper) and only had to reboot several
times the rest of the test. The memory issue would remove the SCP portion of
the program so again not a biggie.

The first night both 40 and 80 were in much better shape than last year. I was
actually able to run a bit on both bands compared to zero running last year. 160
again was not very good with only DR1A and M8M worked from Europe first night
and G, OK and UA2 the second. 80 was worse the second night with Europe
disappearing for some time so no running on the second night on either band for
me.

I had the second radio on 10 early on Sunday and picked up some nice African
mults and the only Europe was a GW.

After a month of testing it took this contest for me to finally figure out that
my new 8 circle 80 meter receiving array is not right because signals south were
louder in the north position. All month long I thought something was wrong but
it seemed to work ok but the pattern was not as clean as my 160 rx array so now
I have something to work on. All other antennas and equipment showed no
problems.

I had only 8 JAâ??s on 40, 23 on 20 and 108 on 15. I picked up a few Asian
mults on 40 and 80 that I donâ??t normally work.

Dupes were way down this year-thanks.

It is very difficult to find a run freq on 40 through 15 for a single op. No
matter what you do you are infringing on someoneâ??s elseâ??s freq bandwidth.
Very few frequency fights though-tnx for that.

Thanks to all the DXâ??expeditioners out there (the security measures make it
more and more difficult to do this) and CQ magazine for making this such a
great event. My first CQWW was in 1963 (single band 15) and this was my 38th
straight one except for one.
