Comments:
Knowing that I am not going to win the world, or North America, or even the
Caribbean, my goals are to give out the Montserrat multiplier to as many
stations as possible, contribute some points to FRC and have some FUN! So
basically I run my behind off. I also tend to spend more time than I should on
160M, but I think that is genetic. Anyway, I achieved all three goals again
this year.
I also enjoy erecting the antennas and putting the station together here on
Montserrat, but I must confess it was a LOT easier to do it last year when AD4J
and W4GKA were here to share the work. In addition to installing the TH6 on the
crankup tower, I built a 2-el wire beam for 40M and mounted it on the side of
the tower. Lazy inverted vees for 80M and 160M rounded out the antennas. I
think the 40M beam was a bit of an improvement, but I need something rotatable
in the future.
The TH6 works like gangbusters. I was really cranking on the high bands. It
was awesome being answered alternately by JAs and US stations in the late
afternoon on 15M and 20M. Unfortunately, I think I only caught the tail end of
an opening to EU on 10M Saturday. Oh well.
We had a brief power outage here Saturday night. It really didn't cost me much
because I was kind of running on fumes at the time. So I slept for 90 minutes
before getting back at it. At this point I completed the family trifecta when
my nephew, Patrick (K6AAX), called me on 160M, where he was making a
single-band effort (remember, it's in the genes). I had already worked
Patrick's father, Jeff (VY2ZM) and my other ZM brother, Peter (K3ZM).
That's another huge part of the fun of it all - working friends and family.
Naw, I'm not getting all mushy on you, I'm just saying that it really gives me
a boost to keep at it when I contact someone I know. I got a kick out being
called by Trond, LA9VDA, who was one of the ops at LN8W. Trond was staying in
this very same guest house (Gingerbread Hill) in 2004, when K3ZM and I first
operated from Montserrat.
I met with the gentleman who represents the new licensing body on Montserrat,
the Inter-Communications Authority. New processes, prices, etc., are being
established, and things are in a state of flux right now. The Authority does
not have an office as of yet, so there is not even an address for it. Happily,
the gentleman understands how important it is to hams visiting Montserrat to get
their licenses before they travel, and he understands our desires for vanity
callsigns. Until the new process is published, feel free to contact me for

Anyway, another one is in the books. I had all the antennas taken down by 1PM
today (11/1) except for the 160M vee. I think I'll put out a few CQs this
evening before turning in. Thanks to everyone who stuck it out in the pileups
to work me this weekend. I really appreciate it.
