Ali (A71BX) led the QARS contest team for the first Multi-Multi operation in
Qatar. It was done Field Day-style at the beach with verticals for each band
plus a tribander used on 10m to supplement the vertical array. Alwan (A71CO)
did amazing work to organize the temporary buildings, electricity, air
conditioning repairs, food, etc. Dave (K5GN), Abdulla (A71CV), Rashed (A71AN),
and Mohammed (A71EL) did their part, too, making it a team success.
The guest hams from California and Finland have travelled the world to operate
multi-multi from so many locations that they were able to take in stride all
the problems that our first-time operation could bring up. Everyone learned
something this weekend! Dick (N6AA) is the ringleader and helped solve the
electrical load issues, station setup, etc. Art (W6XD) made the antenna
switchboxes and the computer networking look easy. Jorma (OH2KI) missed most
of the setup time but worked hard while he was here. John (AB6BH) helped with
the wiring and was in on most of the antenna erection and tuning. Marty (N6VI)
made sure that the low band station setup would work and generally kept us all
in an upbeat mode when things looked impossible. Terry (K6BL) just kept
finding things to make right or make better. Wild Bill (WB6BFG) was
everywhere, ready to help and telling stories while helping.
Murphy only hit one amplifier, a new-out-of-the-box OM Power amp with infant
mortality issues. Lots of cell phone and internet time was spent trying to get
it to work, to no avail. Hard to solve that kind of issue under time pressure
("it's 2100Z, what are we going to do now?") Fortunately, we had a backup
amp.
Murphy did strike in the form of a serious electrical miswiring of one of the
trailers. 'BFG was electrocuted when he stepped from the wet beach onto the
steel steps up to the main trailer after it was left ungrounded and improperly
wired into the three-phase generator. Fortunately, he only got a nasty shock
and a twisted ankle from jumping away. The same wiring problem also took out
the air conditioner controls and all the light sockets.
Murphy's only effects on the radio equipment were a rig that was plugged in
when the power was wrongly setup and an unrelated problem of our inability to
get a brand-new OM Power amplifier working. Fortunately, we had a backup MP
and small Ameritron amp, so we were able to keep six stations on the air.
Our results exceeded our stretch goal of 10000 QSOs and 20 million points. We
all went home after takedown and site cleanup amazed and very pleased with the
final score.
