First January single-op since 2004, when I was a relative newbie to contesting.
This one was a real improvement, and I enjoyed every moment of it.
Normally, I gear up for the RTTY Roundup on this early January weekend, but
like the eleven year sunspot cycle, these two events have their own calendar
timing. My plan was to work the full 10 hours of NAQP and then shift to RTTY
and catch low band action in the wee hours. Like others, I dreaded the
collisions between low power CW ops and swarthy RTTY tones, especially on 40
meters, but the two events dovetailed nicely. Many thanks to both groups!
Making a midnight (local) switch from CW to RTTY sounded like a good idea a few
weeks ago, but when the moment came, I was beat, and it took a while to find a
new groove. The Roundup requires at least six hours off, taken in a maximum of
two breaks. I shot one of them in the sack, leaving only one for a long, long
Saturday.
The low power NAQP gave me a chance to see how a new homebrew 4 el wire LPDA
(August 1986 QST) performed. A sloper, pointing towards EU, it seemed a bit
better than the SteppIR vertical, which has had the full load since the SteppIR
yagi's 30/40 meter "trombone" failed last September. The LPDA was an
interesting build, but performance seems lacking, so back to the drawing
board.
