Started playing around casually at the start of the contest on 15m. Saw some
real strange one way propagation. Normally the 15m path between VE4 and VE5 is
via backscatter and very weak at best. If we are luck and there is no pileup or
high local noise level, we might make a QSO out of it. However on Saturday while
tuning across the band I heard VE5CPU running and he was peaking at S7-S8, when
he would normally be an S0-S1 level. I tried going back to him for 10 minutes
and only received a QRZ??? once. Very strange one way propagation.
After 2000z took the rest of the day off to focus on NAQP. Played from
0600-0700z and then back on at 1230. No DX on 40 at all. The EU opening on 20
was short lived and unfortunately was filled with domestic interruptions. Heard
just a few weak EU signals on 15m.
Based on recent contests, 10m seems to open at around 1700z and right on cue, a
few strong signals emerged. Surprisingly it was the W4 and W5 stations that were
the strongest. All signals were N/S except for a weak call from CT.
Had a couple hours at the 110+ Q's per hour rate on 20 and 1 good hour on 40m.
Down from last years score but despite the casual effort, still had plenty of
Left the amp off all weekend although I was tempted to turn it on to supplement
the heating in the shack!
Hope we made it into your log!
