As it turns out this was no different from other contests for me -- restricted
to more of a casual operation than contest operation. An unplanned family item
left 26 hours for the contest. However, it was still great fun while it
lasted.
Conditions the first day were, to say the least, outstanding. Whatever I could
hear, I worked. Being SOAB, Assisted let me see who was on the bands and there
were few that I couldn't hear. I started the contest on 20 meters until
sundown and then progressed down in frequency until each band was picked clean.
My plan was to stay with it until 0700 or 0800, catch some sleep during the
usual lull and then hit it again at 1100 or 1130. I finally gave up at 1045
due to pure exhaustion...being older has its disadvantages. A quick nap and it
was back at it at 1330. Again, the conditions were outstanding. Unfortunately,
family actities do not let me enjoy the daylight openings on 20, 15, and 10 and
the QSO totals suffer. No big runs as this one was mostly S&P looking for
mults.
However, on Sunday moring (1400) the conditions on 15 meters were very poor.
The last bite at the apple was from 1400 to 1500 Sunday before going heading
off for a family trip that lasted all day Conditions seemed not to improve
during that hour. That was disappointing as I had planned to use the Sunday
moring hours to collect QSOs and mults from Europe and Africa. Although
several new mults were being posted on the cluster, I found them difficult to
work due to weak signals.
Thanks to all who pulled me out of the mud on the low frequencies, especially
on 160. Great to work many familiar callsigns during the test. I look forward
to another exciting weekend next month on SSB, but I still like the CW test
best.
