Radio: K3 at 12 watts (after first 21 QSOs at 60 watts)
Antennas: G5RV 9 meters high, roof mounted 20 meter GP
TR4W logging software

Well I'll have to say this was a new experience but not necessarily one I want
to repeat. What a difference a year makes. Last year was the experience of a
lifetime at WRTC. Operating with N4TZ as R31D we made almost 3000 contacts.
This year operating from our Colorado vacation home I struggled to make 250.

I have operated several IARU contests from here in the past as we are usually
here for most of July. My antennas are a G5RV that is maybe 30 feet off the
ground and a 20 meter roof mounted ground plane. That's a far cry from my
antennas at home but it makes you appreciate what much of the ham population
has to use. With 100 watts though I'm normally able to have a few runs and work
a fair amount of DX. Not to be this year though.

During Field Day my K3 started giving an occasional "12V Err" message and the
transmitter would shut down. Turning the radio off and back on would reset
things and all seemed OK. This happened 4 or 5 times. I thought it was perhaps
a power supply problem but not long after I set it up here it got progressively
worse to the point where the transmitter cycled off when the power reached 12
watts (that's where the amplifier kicks in). I contacted Elecraft and they
diagnosed the problem as a faulty connector on the amplifier board. Though they
offered free replacement parts, repair was out of the question with the limited
tools I have here. I decided to wait until I get back home to do the repair and
operate without the amplifier, limiting me to 12 watts.

To my delight the day before the contest the amplifier began working again. I
decided I would run it at half power in hopes it would make it through the
contest. Well that lasted for about 45 minutes and 21 contacts. So I struggled
through the rest of the contest with 12 watts. Technically that makes me LP but
I'd call it QRP+.

I have worked a few contests from home with QRP but with good antennas I worked
most of the stations I heard. This was much different, particularly on 10 and 15
meters where the G5RV is a poor performer (the 20 meter ground plane works
better on those bands even with its high SWR). Many strong DX stations CQed in
my face. Even some US stations couldn't hear me. Others struggled through to
copy my call. I tried CQing but that was a total waste â?" all of my contacts
were S&P.

I was surprised to find I seemed to get out on SSB almost as well as on CW,
especially on 20 meters. The award for best ears has to go to JX5O who was
right at the noise level on 20 meter SSB but came back to me on first call.
Honorable mention goes to TM0HQ who heard my 12 watts on first call on 40 meter
SSB and to NU1AW/5 who was the only station worked on 160 where I loaded up the
center conductor of the G5RV with 60 feet of buried feedline.
