K3 + AL-80B(800 W) + Win-Test ; 63% of QSOs via CQ runs.
This score was a personal best for me after many years in the IARU contest
running low power. I only ran HP in this contest in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
Considering the poor band conditions, using HP makes things much more
enjoyable. The downside is that being in the HP category makes it tough for my
little pistol station to ever outscore any of the big stations, in IL and
Central Division U.S., that have multiple, high, antenna-stacked towers and run
1500 watts.
Having a few high-rate hours, having the rate meter topping 180 at times, and
several times making 3 or 4 QS0s per minute, made it more fun. The good rates
and more DX heard did not happen until more towards the second half of this
contest. It seemed more like a U.S. / VE contest for much of the time. I
started at 1205Z Saturday, and I had only 300 QSOs logged when I stopped for
lunch around 1700Z -- with about 25 minutes of break time included. I had 641
QSOs logged when I stopped for supper around 2300Z. Still, the goal was to
make over 1000 Qs and beat my score of last year. I resumed around 0005Z
Sunday and operated (with a couple of short breaks) until 1000Z on Sunday to
get a few hours sleep before having to leave home around 1400Z. Op-time this
year was only 0.5 hour less than last year, but the score improved by 200 more
Qs, 27 more mults, and 153k more points.
I have run LP for most of my 53 plus years in ham radio, but my attitude is
changing. As the saying goes, "life is too short for QRP." The past few
years, I have started running higher power and adopted the more practical view
of -- at my age, life is too short for low power. :)
