NAQP, in my opinion, is the perfect SO contest. Right length, right times, and
right rules. 100W rule makes it "wind in your face" to deal with the elements
of propagation, QRN, etc. with no rock crushers on the band to hammer the 1G
and 2G second (or primary) radios out there.
Great to see a 5 or 6 band domestic contest again. My 160 antenna is down so
don't know what I missed there. As noisy as 80 was, probably nothing much. 15
played pretty well but the fast QSB could make a station go from S9 to
unreadable from initial contact to copying his exchange. That's when I wished
for a stack instead of my 75' tribander.
QRN was a factor here, even on 20, but at least no active lightning. In fact,
took a half hour break at 0120 just to let 40 settle down. My north beverage
was out so mostly used Tx antenna on 80. Could only copy the west coast with
the west beverage so had a lot of manual switching.
Taking into account the QSB and QRN and a 2G second radio with limited antenna
options I just didn't have the capability or skills for much SO2R. Found my
rate was better concentrating on copying one radio and just using the second to
check band conditions.
Overall, a great contest and a warmup for SS.
