I did not plan on operating as much as I did. I missed the start, threw the
vertical up in the dark Friday night after I got home from work (to be ready
for sunrise Saturday). After a quick check of 10/15 (nothing to work) and 20
(JA/KL7/KH6), I went to 40 where there were lots of loud Europeans, and they
were hearing me! I stayed for a little over an hour, then went to get dinner
and watch some TV. When I got back about 0530z (10:30 p.m. local time), Europe
on 40 was still good, and worked a bunch more. It's a good thing I did, because
24 hours later, it was a different contest.
I slept through (= blew off) local sunrise Saturday, so I missed the stuff in
Asia/Pacific on 40, though I did work both JA and ZL before going to bed.
Skipped 20 because 15 was already hot into Europe, and I even worked a few of
them on 10. When those bands slowed down, I worked my first Europe on 20. I
ran some errands Saturday afternoon, then got back on at about 2200z to work JA
and other stuff on 10/15, and made a few sweeps of 20, mostly for mults.
It's good the high bands stayed open as long as they did. There was nothing to
work on 40 (and I mean nothing) so I took the dinner/TV break again. When I
resumed about the same time as the previous evening, there was still nothing
from Europe, but managed to put a few zone 8/9 mults in the log, and even
worked JW/LZ1UQ. When it got down to just being able to work JA on 40, I
popped up to 20 and worked ZS2DL and ZS2NF at just about midnight local time.
I'm guessing this was long path, but I don't have a directional antenna.
I did wake up on Sunday morning to work 40 sunrise, lots of loud JAs, worked
VK6LW (new) and BA5CW (also new) with one call! I found DV1/JO7KMB calling CQ
all by himself, so worked him before inviting everyone else. T88ZO was a
challenge, but not as hard as I expected. Before last fall, I had never worked
T8 on 40 meters. Ever. Now I have three different calls in the log.
10m was in sorry shape, but there were still some mults to be had. Spotlight
propagation on the Caribbean all weekend, so it required constant checking. I
scraped together some more Europe on 15, but signals were down, with some
arctic flutter on just about everyone. I took an early afternoon break when
things got too slow. I couldn't hear 4U1ITU on 20, and LX7I was weak and
couldn't hear me. Shorty after I returned about 1.5 hours later, I added both
to the log. Finished with a nice JA opening on 15, and even worked a few more
on 10. I never did find LU on 15 the first day; it took until Sunday afternoon
to finally work LS1D, then I added a few more to the log later.
I noticed several interesting phenomena on Sunday afternoon:
1. Every time a new station came on the air, everyone who had spots from CW
Skimmer would descend on this pour soul like a herd of locusts (no offense,
K6VVA). Packet pileups on PY and other stuff like that.
2. I was surprised by the stuff that the CW Skimmer didn't find. More times
than I remember, I found multipliers CQing without an answer. I'd check and
there would be no recent "traditional" DX cluster spots (I was not using
Skimmer spots). It was fun to spot the DX and listen to all the
multis/unlimited stations show up.
3. Work all the mults you can on Saturday - the pileups were huge on Sunday
afternoon! I remember at one point rotating through four VFOS (two on each of
two bands), trying to gauge my probability of success getting through four
different pileups. Some I knew I'd never get through (HR5 showed up on 15,
first time in the contest). Some I waited virtually forever for the pileup to
thin before calling. And some I timed just right that I got though without
much difficulty, even with lots of folks still calling.
Once again I missed DXCC in a weekend, this time by *one* country!
