Comments:

The consensus seems to be that, for this year's ARRL DX CW, conditions were very
good, perhaps excellent. Super-impressive scores from my neighboring states
(especially MT, UT, and CO) lend strong support to such a consensus.

For me, though, conditions -- overall -- were not as favorable as in 2011.

Here are a few facts:

My best 160m hour in 2011 beat my best 160m hour in 2012 by 17 Q's.
My best 80m hour in 2011 beat my best 80m hour in 2012 by 9 Q's.
My best 40m hour in 2011 beat my best 40m hour in 2012 by 7 Q's.
My best 15m hour in 2011 beat my best 15m hour in 2012 by 16 Q's.

My best rates in 2012 beat my best rates in 2011 only on 10m and 20m.

Problem areas:

160m/80m/40m: Summer-like static crashes, coupled with high absorption,
undermined copy and rates (not to mention my motivation) rather severely.

20m: Auroral effects in the EU-to-WY circuit were as pronounced as I have ever
heard. Many EU stations QRMed themselves. How can that be? It's because
multi-path effects featured just enough time differential to cause a signal
arriving via path #2 to fill the CW dit spaces of a signal arriving from the
selfsame station via path #1. When this was compounded by multiple zero-beat
callers, copy was a no-hoper, even though many signals were strong.

I must say, then, that I'm most grateful for the many utterly necessary
repeats. And for the Q's!
