Comments:
Strange contest. Nothing but JA/Asia on 40 and 15, but nothing but EU on 20.
As bad as things could have been, I will take the propagation we had this
weekend. I had a lot of fun. It is fun to be a multiplier, even if you are
the last to get through on the pileups.
Decided to start this one and see how it went. Had dreams of running EU
simplex on 40, since the band was so good on CW. That didn't happen!
Virtually no EU worked there at all. Until the last ten minutes of the contest
I still needed G and DL on 40. After 5 minutes of calling I finally landed G6PZ
at 2355z. Never got through to the DL. Amazing to miss DL in a major contest,
but that's how it was up here.
Very windy for most of the contest. When I got up from my nap the second night
I went out with a flashlight to see if the antennas were still pointed the right
way. Wow it was warm! Still in the 40's in the middle of the night. Not
exactly a typical Montana winter. Everything worked perfectly.
I remember two fun moments specifically. The first was working NH2L on 160.
We tried to move there a few times with no success, but on Sunday morning there
was one last chance. It didn't work. But I suggested to Dave when he came back
to my 40m run freq that he just call CQ for 5 mins and I'd keep listening on the
second radio and I'd call him if he came up out of the noise. And that's
exactly what happened - for all of about 10 seconds. But that was enough.
The second moment was right at the end when I was calling G6PZ on 40m, who was
operating split. 40m at the end is almost never workable out here -- you can
hear the EU guys, but it is way before sunset and they almost never hear you.
So I called for about 3 minutes with no success at all. Finally the operator
there says "who is the victor?" I screamed for a while more and he's saying
"is that november six echo victor?" Then I counted out the numbers in my call
(a very effective technique, BTW) and he says "november nine echo victor?" So
I scream "radio victor" for a while and all of a sudden you can tell he is
getting very excited. "Is that radio victor? november nine radio victor in
Montana?" He was all bubbly about getting a new mult in the last five minutes,
as was I for avoiding the embarrassment of not working a G on a major band. I
am not much of a phone fan, but this was one time that it was really neat.
Last major contest here until September Sprint. Have a nice spring/summer
everyone!
