This was the culmination of a lot of hours this fall / winter putting the
station back together. Deployed some new antenna and they all played awesome.
Felt loud all weekend.
Some fixes to the nearly 20 year old FT1000 a few weeks before the CQ 160 and
then the installation of the W8JI Noise Blanker mod 2 days before the this
test made this a transfomative event. If you have a FT1000 I can highly
recommend this and the CW keying mods offered by W8JI. They plug right in, no
wire cuts. Awesome.
Station was ready, body was not, I could only manage 34 hours in the chair.
Slept right through the alarm on a planned 3 hour break Fri night/ Sat morning
then had to grab several short naps to avoid falling asleep at the keyboard.
Sunday was better than Saturday.
Great Low Band conditions, new high score from the WO1N station, though not
the most Q's, reflecting the poor chair time. Best hours hovered right around
120 on both days. As a low power op I think the RBN/Skimmers really help,
despite the ensuing packet pileups that occur almost immediately. You work
through that and then a short time later another wave occurs when someone does
a traditional spot. I really enjoy them though sometimes I have to admit it
just sounds like a wall of sound until you start working it down.
Thanks all for the Q's,
Ken
