Comments:
Dealing with health issues in my wife's family plus trying to make some INQP
noise limited me to basically Sunday operation here. I only made 17 CW Q's and
1 phone on Saturday. Sunday was great finishing within a cat's whisker of
W8TM's low power score. I would guess no other station outside New England did
as well Sunday, but you don't win operating about half of the time. WA1Z/M
provided a steady stream of 20M Q's as he changed counties up until about
1930Z, and I even made about 3 Q's with KX9X and KM3T mobiles on 20 roaming
around tougher nearer CT and RI. But K1KI eluded me on 20 and VT was my
multiplier downfall working only 7 of it 14 counties. I had sweeps of CT, NH,
and RI, and only missed Franklin, MA and 3 in ME.
All day long it was a struggle of MUF vs. 20M from here. If I were only
50-100 miles farther away, I could have done significantly better. Most of the
time stations in extreme Eastern MA and farther north were loud, and closer
were right on the edge of the skip zone or worked on backscatter. The peak
bacscatter direction was just south of the direct path in the morning, but
changed around mid afternoon. Skip was the shortest from 1645-1730Z here, but
20 M phone activity at that time had reached a low for some reason (NE stations
had worked out 20 and were up on 15?), but I delayed lunch and kept trying to
run/S&P to the maximum number of Q's possible.
40 was totally devoid of mid day activity here, but picked up quickly around
20Z about an hour after 20 had gone long from here. I pretty well maxed out the
40M Q's and signals were quite loud except during the middle of the day. 80
would have been a lot better with more time spent Saturday night. 15M signals
were weak on backscatter here, thanks to the 10 stations who dug me out.
Activity seems to be on the rise a bit, but trying to compete with stations
farther away who can even work New England on 15 remains a challenge. Many
thanks to all for the QSO's and will be back for another try next year with 20
hopefully cooperating. There seemed to be little if any Es help this year.
