Well this was a nice surprise! I didnâ??t have to DJ a wedding, birthday party,
prom or anything this weekend, and since school is out, I didnâ??t have anything
to do, so imagine my joy when I finally got my new shack calendar from CQ
magazine and saw there was a contest this weekend. Normally I donâ??t like WPX
contests because you have to exchange numbers. So when an operator gives me 599
2148 and I give back 599 T74 (074) then I feel kind of inadequate. But this was
a FREE weekend so I jumped in, free because I didnâ??t expect to work it and
didnâ??t have to plan off for it!
Everyone was nice coming back to me with the numbers again and again, since
there was a solar storm going on, I had trouble with some of the lighter
signals especially from northern EU AS direction. Why anyone would send code at
any time at 40 wpm on 40m during a solar storm baffles me. I recorded some from
last fall and played it for my astronomy class so they could hear some serious
auroral flutter, it wasnâ??t that bad, but everything sounded like a warbling
tone instead of code.
Still I made quite a few contacts, my 80m inverted L is still up, but with no
coax or radial wires, so not much going on there. 160m was eggs frying here, so
I had to stick mainly with 10 â?" 40. And it was pretty good. I made lots
of contacts and I tried to contact everyone from the Society of Midwest
Contesters club that I heard. Thanks to KB9OWD K9CT and others for hearing my
reply to their CQ. I even got on 15 at 21.069 and called CQ for a bit. To my
surprise P33W came back to me and almost blew me out of the chair! That was a
definite highlight of the weekend.
Again, thanks for the QSOâ??s, I know my log isnâ??t GOLDEN because the solar
storm made it kind of hard to pick out the correct numbers, another reason I
donâ??t really like the WPX CW, but since Terry N4TZ is with the committee, I
thought for the sake of another SMCâ??er I would try it out and to give out
that KD9 prefix too!
I am looking forward to the WPX RTTY again. I like that one, even if we have to
give out and receive numbers. I had a great time this weekend and look forward
to the beginning of the fall contest season!
