Dear OMs and YLs,
Conditions were never good and signal seldom strong. I left the K3
Preamp on and did not back off the RF gain much - this caused no difficulty.
It was always easy to find a free spot from which to make a run but the run
rates were meager. The maximum rate was 85 in one hour and only seven hours of
thirty exceeded a rate of 60. DX was there to be worked but one needed to dig.
Then out of the blue a VU would call in off the side of the Yagi when their
night was well advanced. No ZLs, a few VK and a good number of JA stations
entered the log. In the other direction W6 and W7 call areas were rare. My
suspicion is that the few W6 worked were not on the west coast; thus a large
pool of prefixes were not available!
The best weekend of the year in EI was given up and as luck may have it that
was our summer; all complaints aside this contest was fun! It is fascinating
to watch the propagation change when there are a large number of hams spanning
the globe.
Long live CW!!!
