Comments:
Well, not my best weekend. The Aurora really played havoc with the bands for
most of the weekend. In this latitude, gone were the hours and hours of runs to
the US or Japan - every QSO was hard work. Things were not helped by me trying a
different strategy for which 36 hours to operate, and this simply did not work.
I missed some good openings, in exchange for really fast Eu runs, but that was
not a smart idea. Had we not had the aurora, I might have got away with the
working pattern I chose, but alas not this weekend.
Some appalling signals, and it was really frustrating to be working down to the
noise level, only to have QSOs ruined by wideband clicks. A few shoot-outs for
frequency real estate. But I've noticed an interesting technique emerging. At a
time where runs are hard, find someone getting brisk business, and set up shop
100Hz away. Steal their pile-up and stick with the frequency. Happened to me
once, until I worked out what was going on.
Main business was on 20m. I could not get rate going on 15, and even 40 was
hard. Because of the way mults work in WPX, I didn't worry too much about 80 or
160, but 10 produced some good SA openings.
I have a feeling that activity in general was down, and UK activity
particularly was not much in evidence. For what should be one of the really
good fun contests, this is rather sad.
I don't expect this to be a good score, but it was fun, in a masochistic sort
of way. The good news is that it was a good shake-down for the station prior
to IARU contest, and everything worked fine - I did no preparation whatsoever,
and just went in and switched on before the start.
