Comments:
This is the real AK1W score report...
You never know what you will get for conditions at the end of May. Summer is
not like the Fall or Spring events. WPX seems to be cursed with solar storms
over the past few years.
I was enticed into operating when I heard that K0DQ and K1LZ were going to have
a shoot out with their scores posting in real time on the cqcontest.ru site. I
also knew Kevin, N5DX, was going to be operating from W5WMU in Maine and doing
the same. No Scot or Krassy, but Kevin was posting his score so it was fun to
keep track of how he was doing.
I operated full speed for the first 18 hours with just a 3 hour nap. Since I
had not planned on a serious operation, it was time to walk the dog and watch
the European Football Championship match. It was an exciting match and worth
missing some contesting.
Got back on, but conditions were not improving. Effectively quit at the 24
hour mark when my family informed me that I needed to cook dinner. Everything
after that was operating for fun and trying to stay ahead of Kevin on the
scoreboard.
As the K index fell on Sunday afternoon, the conditions did start to improve.
The UA9s started calling in on 20 meters and I worked some JA on 15m. If only
it had been like this all weekend...
Best QSO was P29NO calling in on 15 meters with just a few minutes left to go
in the contest. Biggest surprise was having B7M call in on 15m with a booming
signal over Europe at 1530z Sunday. Never heard any Europe on 10m, but the
band was full of South Americans.
With the high bands open, it made it much easier to get a frequency on 40
meters. Unfortunately, not much DX there. My points per QSO was way down from
previous years.
The rapid QSB made copying numbers difficult at times. I asked for lots of
repeats just to make sure I got it right, but still don't expect this to be one
of my more accurate contests. But, it was fun.
Thanks to all who activated those unusual prefixes!
