Comments:
KD8BEO and I set up for a few hours in Fort Washington National Park, a few
miles south of Washington, DC on the Potomac River. In retrospect, we probably
should have chosen a few hours later on during the event since it was tough
getting through the pileups with only five watts and the magnetic loop. We only
made 11 QSOs during that time, with some time spent setting up for and
attempting to work two passes of AO-7. Unfortunately, we couldn't make any QSOs
or even find ourselves in the downlink of AO-7. I have copied myself on the
downlink of AO-7 with this equipment before. Plenty of stations were heard.
Perhaps too many people were hitting the satellite with higher power and that's
why my five watts wasn't making it through. Too bad VO-52 or FO-29 didn't pass
over while we were out as those satellites likely would have been easier to
work.
All digital QSOs were RTTY. For some reason, I couldn't make any QSOs with
DroidPSK. I'll have to do some tests and home and figure out why. Using a
smartphone with a 3.5" screen to make digital QSOs is a bit difficult. I
kept hitting the wrong buttons. Lost a couple of QSOs because of that.
Portable operation is fun though. Despite the low QSO total during this trip, I
hope to get out a bit more often and try it out.

DroidPSK apps connected with a WolphiLink Android phone interface.
